ADIA worldwide celebration of Diabetes Day with a Lectura

Due to the celebration last Monday of the worldwide Diabetic Day, the Association of Diabetics of Águilas organized a lecture on the same day in la Casa de la Cultura.
This lecture, conducted by the chiropodist Jesús Pérez Espinosa dealt with “Complications of the diabetic foot. Preventions and treatment”.
Pérez Espinosa explained to those who assisted, the most important precautions that a person with diabetes must take to avoid complications that can lead to thefatal consecuence of an amputation.
We must remember that this year the celebration has based its attention on this heath hazard for those who suffer this illness and it has been presented with the general motto “Start on a good foot, avoid amputations”.
Of all amputations of lower limbs, those between 40% and 70% are due to diabetes, 85% of these surgeries are preceded by an ulcer.
On the other hand, it has been calculated that in 2003, those affected by this illness reached 194 millions.
The forecast for the year 2025 is that this number will be increasedd to 333 millions of the world population as a consequence of a higher life expectancy, a sedentary life style and a change in food pattern.
